Axios, Generation Lab, and Syracuse University Launch Groundbreaking AI Experts Survey

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] — Axios, in collaboration with Generation Lab and Syracuse University’s Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship and Autonomous Systems Policy Institute, are proud to announce the release of the inaugural Axios-Generation Lab-Syracuse University AI Experts Survey. This groundbreaking survey, conducted from July 14 to August 6, 2023, marks a significant milestone in harnessing the collective expertise of leading minds in the field of computer science and engineering.

The poll, based on responses from interviews with a representative sample of 213 esteemed professors, focuses on the insights and perspectives of experts in these fields. The respondents were drawn from 65 of the top 100 computer science programs in America, (as defined by the SCImago Journal's institutional rankings).

WHY? When we consider the world’s biggest challenges, we look to the experts. But when journalists, policymakers and corporations say “experts say…” we’re only hearing from a few.

The poll's key findings, unveiled in collaboration with Axios, shed light on critical issues in the AI landscape:

KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE:

  • A plurality (37%) supported having a federal agency regulate AI, compared with a global organization or treaty (22%), Congress (16%), the White House (4%) or the private sector (3%).

  • Experts are split on how to regulate AI. Between options like “liability frameworks” and “human-in-the-loop” requirements, no regulatory strategy garnered more than 16% of expert support.
